SOCLEMA has equipped an LNG bunker barge with its CryoSamp liquefied natural gas vaporizer.

The Clean Jacksonville bunker barge, with a capacity of 2,200 m3, is designed to supply TOTE maritime's LNG-fuelled container ships, which operate between Jacksonville, Florida and San Juan, Puerto Rico.
\nThe new barge has gone into service as the maritime industry explores the option of liquefied natural gas as an alternative to traditional fuel, which is too polluting. The International Maritime Organization's (IMO) targets for reducing emissions from the maritime sector are driving the shift towards LNG as a fuel. These include the implementation of a worldwide cap of 0.50% mass per mass (m/m) on the sulfur content of fuel oil used by ships from January 1, 2020. This represents a substantial reduction on the current global cap of 3.50% m/m for the sulfur content of fuel oil used by ships. For the IMO, this new global cap on sulfur content meets the challenges of protecting the environment and safeguarding human health. In view of these new regulations, LNG has the advantage of preserving air quality by emitting low quantities of sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides and fine particles, and reducing CO2 emissions by around 25%.
\nTo meet the new emissions standards, shipowners can opt for low-sulfur fuel, install smoke scrubbers or choose LNG, which is the only long-term solution.
\nLNG also has the advantage of being available and competitively priced compared with other fuels. It does, however, require investment in ship conversion and construction, and in both onshore and ship-to-ship refueling infrastructure.
